Bridging the Gap: Integrating Lab Results with Holistic Health Practices

 
 

Many of us have faced the frustration of being handed lab results and told everything is “normal”—yet we’re still dealing with anxiety, fatigue, constipation, or mood swings.
But if your labs are “normal,” why don’t you feel normal?

This is where conventional medicine often falls short. Standard lab ranges are designed to detect disease, not dysfunction. If your results aren’t bad enough to warrant a diagnosis, you may be left with little direction—until things get worse.

My Story: When ‘Normal’ Labs Didn’t Tell the Whole Truth

I’ve lived this firsthand. In college, I experienced troubling symptoms, but my labs were consistently labeled “normal” or just barely off. It wasn’t until I knew the right buzzwords to say that my doctor finally ordered more advanced tests—eventually leading to a diagnosis of SIBO. Years of symptoms could have been addressed earlier if someone had looked deeper.

More recently, a client came to me with sudden anxiety and back pain. Her yearly bloodwork showed only slight irregularities—nothing her doctor felt was worth addressing.
But when I reviewed her labs using functional blood chemistry ranges—which are based on optimal health rather than disease—I saw a different story: patterns suggesting hormone imbalances, sluggish detox pathways, and low vitamin D. These clues gave us the insight we needed to take action before things progressed further.

Why Functional Lab Interpretation Matters

Functional lab analysis bridges the gap between conventional testing and holistic care. Instead of waiting for a diagnosis, it allows us to:

  • Analyze patterns and trends

  • Use tighter, optimal ranges

  • Connect lab values directly to symptoms

  • Guide lifestyle-based, root-cause interventions

For example, your child might have a normal CBC and even a “clean” upper endoscopy. But a GI MAP stool test could still reveal gut inflammation, dysbiosis, or elevated markers linked to mood and behavior. These are insights that standard testing often overlooks.

Conventional medicine uses lab ranges that are lab & population dependent. They take an average of all people including healthy & chronically diseased. Functional ranges are the average of only healthy, thriving individuals. This allows us to catch patterns of dysfunction before they spiral into something more serious. For example, Vitamin D norms=30-80 ng/mL whereas the functional range is 60-100 ng/mL. If someone sits at 32 ng/mL, a provider might say, “You’re fine.” But functionally, this level could be contributing to fatigue, poor immunity, low mood, and hormonal imbalances.
